Every day, people experience the brokenness and fragmentation of our relationships, systems, and natural world. Christians believe this crisis began with a broken relationship—a broken relationship with God.

That broken relationship sent out ripples into the world of corruption and death. It left a longing in us for restoration.

Nobody has escaped this crisis. But, throughout time, God has been at work bringing restoration and reconciliation, and his people are at work with him. Followers of Jesus are not just powerless witnesses to the brokenness and fragmentation. As co-workers with God, we can make a difference. Even now, men and women around the world are doing just that, in Canada, the United States, and all over the world.

We are faced with immense problems, and yet God’s healing power is already being released into the earth. Our mission as followers of Jesus is the best mission that could be imagined. It makes a difference and satisfies the deepest questions about who we are.

Our environment is broken.

“The earth dries up and withers” (Isaiah 24:4 NIV)

Our systems are failing.

“Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields [sewed your clothes] are crying out against you.” (James 5:4 NIV)

Our relationships are fragmented.

“It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on.”(Galatians 5:19-21 MSG)

Brokenness permeates our reality. Sometimes it feels overwhelming. The good in the world seems harder and harder to find. Is there hope? Ultimately, can I make a difference?
